During February, 6 - 10, 2017 at the Kharkiv Regional Specialized Baby Home # 1 the second training session on pediatric palliative care for representatives of baby homes from different regions of Ukraine was conducted.
The trainers were Andriy Penkov, member of Kharkiv expert group in medical reform, President of the Ukrainian-German Medical Association, pediatrician of the highest category, MD; Olena Riga, professor of the Pediatrics and Neonatology department at the Kharkiv National Medical University, MD; Irina Kondratova, Head of Kharkiv Regional Perinatal Center of the Kharkiv Regional Hospital, MD; Natalia Konovalova, pediatrician, neurologist in Kharkiv Regional Specialized Baby Home #1.
The following topics were covered in this training session: basic medical condition in pediatric palliative care, particularities of perinatal palliative care, malnutrition in children, enteral nutrition, end-of-life care for children, respiratory therapy, communication and team work, communication with children and children ideas of death.
The last training of the session was devoted to the discussion of pediatric palliative care models, goals and objectives of the palliative care department, hospice, and health visiting teams.
Overall 10 trainings on pediatric palliative care (70 hours) for 26 baby homes’ employees from different regions of Ukraine were conducted.
The training session was conducted under the Project “Creating a new model of family-and-community oriented services for children with special needs” supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
